Roman Jarash (Jerash)

by freya_heaven - last update: Jul 24, 2004

Jarash is in Northen Jordan, about 51km north of the capital Amman.

Jarash was our first stop on a backpacking trip around Jordan

It is is now a modern town but also the old ruined town is the best example of a Roman Provincial city in the Middle East.

Many of the ruins were not discovered until 1806 by Ulrich Seetzen (German). In its hay day Roman Jerash is believed to have had a population of 15,000.

Roman Jerash is open daily (except Friday) from 9 am until dark
