Lourdes

by freya_heaven - last update: May 18, 2004

Lourdes was incredibly quiet when we visited in 2002. Over 5 million Catholic pilgrims & visitors come to Lourdes annually, many sadly searching for a cure for themselves or loved ones.

In 1858 a 14 year old peasent girl Bernadette Soubirous started to have visions, 18 all together, in a cave of the Virgin Mary. The Vatican confirmed her visions were real & Bernadette became a saint in 1933.

If you have believe in the occurences at Lourdes, or as we were just inquisitive, then visit, but dont go just to visit the town of Lourdes itself, It is very tacky with many shops selling plastic water bottles in the shape on the Virgin Mary & other tat to sell to the emotionally vulnerable

Happy Freya in our Lourdes Campsite

Actually we had our own little Miracle at Lourdes, that night Freya want to bed, stayed there & slept all through the night!
Nearly 18 months later as I write this page that is still unheard of!

A very interesting page. I am sure the scenery was lovely with a light snow. Clean loos is a big plus also.

I have been twice to Lourdes, once during summer holidays and once in pilgrimage. It's really a touching place, although the many shops disturb the atmosphere.
