I used Naples as a base to do day trips to Pompei and Herculaneum. There is a cool castle there in Naples (Castle Nuovo - <i>shown in picture</i>), and the National Archeological Museum which is definitely a must if you plan to visit Pompei since it contains most of the sculpture, jewelry, mosaics, frescos, and other artifacts recovered from the site.

The actual city of Naples, however, is not as scenic as some of the other places in Italy, since it's really more of a working city than a tourist city, but it does offer the visitor great food and a good insight into an urban Italy that works more for itself and less for the tourists.
