Haunting ruins of the ancient empire. I went in 2000 and back in 2008 and got much more out of it the second time.

The movie 'Gladiator' came out the weekend before I left for Europe and I was glad I saw it when I came to the Colosseum. It brought it alive for me. It is unbelievable that they could have built this 2,000 years ago. It even had a covering for fans in bad weather, like the retractable roof domes that have only recently been built.

Priceless art and I had looked forward to seeing the Sistine Chapel ever since I read Irving Stone's 'The Agony and the Ecstasy.' But I have to admit it was so crowded in there that it took away from the experience.

This was built as a temple to all the gods around 125 A.D. by Hadrian. It is one of the best preserved buildings from its era in Rome. It has long been used as a Christian church. Its size took me by surprise and was well worth the visit. It doesn't take long to see and admission is free.

Famous gathering place for hordes of tourists, these 138 steps were built around 1725 and lead up to the Trinita dei Monti church. The house where Keats died is just off the steps.

One of the main basilicas in Rome, it was started in the fourth century. I visited it because it was close to my hotel but I enjoyed it.

This was built after the Roman Forum and was completed around 113 A.D. Most of it can be seen from the street so its a better deal for people on a budget than the Roman Forum, which is across the street from it.

Incredible museum on Capitoline Hill exhibiting the history of Rome. It was my last stop but would probably be a good first stop on a first trip to Rome.
