Hawker.: Best Curry Puff.

Restaurant Name: Hawker.
In my opinion, the best curry puff in JB is from a stall outside a coffee shop in century under a big tree. The fillings is very fragrant with pieces of chicken and a slice of egg among the fragrant potato filling. The filling is a little bit spicy, a special delicacy in Malaysia. Imagine biting into the crispy skin with soft and warm filling inside... simply delicious and yummy...
Favorite Dish: The boss also sells other kuihs, both deep fried and steam. Nyonya kuihs are my favourites too. Try the soon kuih and ang-ku kuih too. These are all hand made and best of all, home made. They do catering for parties too...

Ah Soon Bak Kut Teh.: Bak Kut Teh

Restaurant Name: Ah Soon Bak Kut Teh.
Bak Kut Teh is pork ribs boiled in a herbal soup. It is usually eaten with a bowl of rice, with lotsa chilli in dark soya sauce. The resturant is usually very packed and hot. However, many people still like to go there cos it is excellent. Even Singaporeans come across the causeway to eat bak kut teh. It is located in Daiman. I know how to drive there. Next time I go there, I will get the name of that road ok? Daiman is a very small area oso. Let me describe how to get there in words from Holiday Inn or Holiday Plaza. Facing the main road of Holiday Inn. Go straight in the direction to your left till you reach a traffic light. Queue at the traffic light at the left side and go straight from the traffice light. At the second turning, turn left. There's a corner shop that do repairs for cars at the turning. Go straight and the shop is along the second row. If it is open, there will be a lot a lot of people and cars outside and you should be able to see. Hope it helps...
Favorite Dish: Bak Kut Teh, Chicken, Tau pok (Fried Beancurd), Giam Chai (sauteed vegetables). What makes this bak kut teh stands out is the soup which taste very delicious.

Todak (owned by so-called Orang Asli): Seafood - Cheap and good.

Restaurant Name: Todak (owned by so-called Orang Asli)
There are many cheap and good seafood restaurants which are built with wood above mangrove swamps and along the coast. These places are usually only accessible by car. Perhaps a unfamiliar person might not find it cos we usually need to pass through some unlit (at night), rural parts to reach the restaurants. This picture is taken in one of the restaurant along the coast near a neighbourhood called Mega Ria. I have been dining there for a few years already. Prices are increasing, but still reasonable (May 2004). It started with no sign-boards at all, and only by word of mouth. The very last time when I go there, I saw some sign boards directing people to this rural part of the place. However, the signs are not very big though... And the number of waiters and waitresses increased too! Looks like this place getting very popular... Gotta go and try it one of these days to see if the food still as superb. Mega Ria is quite far from the causeway. You can reach there by taking the Pasir Gudang Highway and go all the way striaght and exit when you see a sign to Mega Ria. I do not know the exact km, but I know it is far. Sometimes I get a bit lazy to go there unless for special occasions.
Favorite Dish: Seafood. Black pepper crab, steam prawns, Thai-style fish, Thai style vegetable salad

Daiman (Da Ma).: Hawker Center - Daiman
|
Tip Rating: |

|
Restaurant Name: Daiman (Da Ma).
This is a very popular hawker center among Singaporeans. There's a wide variety of food here. I usually come here for the grilled fish and other seafood on banana leaves and with lotsa chilli. yum... It is relatively expensive to eat here, but the selection of food is great. Go there on a dry day, else you might get wet and the floor gets a bit slippery and dirty. You sit in the open air or partial shelter from the tin roofs, and have your food. Bring some tissue paper in case you sweat a lot in the hot weather with the spicy food. If you have forgotten, there are many "touts" (sad to see, usually blind or physically handicapped) selling packets of tissue. There are also many touts selling music cds, titbits, etc, who are very persistent and it gets a bit irritating with too many of them sometimes.
Favorite Dish: Do note that local do not order one dish and eat just that dish by oneself, or order a few dishes and eat by oneself. Usually several dishes will be ordered and shared, so that more dishes can be ordered and tasted. It might be weird or seen as unhygienic for food sharing to many westerners, but we prefer to eat that way.

Restaurant Name: Yak Wang (Duck King).
This shop is in the city center and is along Jalan Segget in the commercial area. It is popular and delicious herbal duck rice. At this restaurant, they serve good ice-kachang (multi-colored ice mountain with peanuts, red beans, etc) too. The signboard of the restaurant stands out because it has a big duck hanging above you.

Seafood.: Seafood Restaurant on Stilts.

Restaurant Name: Seafood.
There are many seafood restaurants. I usually like to go to those that are built on wooden stilts along the coast. There are some that are cheap and good, but some touristy ones are more expensive than average. Just go to the pond and select which type of seafood you want. Catch the fish, prawns, crabs, or other shell fish that you like. These will be weighed and the price is fixed. Then order them cooked to the taste that you like. If you are not familiar, just ask the person who take your order. This picture was taken at the seafood restuarants in Pasir Gudang. It is very far from JB. This place in quite rural, so if you are not familiar, you can get lost. However, this place will be packed with diners during the weekends.
