Imagine a city of steel, concrete, and skyscrapers, with a perfect rectangle of green at its heart. I’ve heard that the Park is an escape valve, that without it, the heat and hurry and pollution of Manhattan would be overwhelming. We didn't do it, but I wish we would've hired a bike to take us around the park. It really is extensive, with rose gardens planted by Yoko Ono, skate parks, vast green spaces, breakdancers, half-naked sunbathers...

Spend an entire afternoon. At least. Don't forget to go on the roof (even if it takes you an hour to find the elevator) for the view of Central Park. Take the time to sit on the steps, eat a pretzel, and watch the street performers. And give 'em a buck or two.

Ok, you've got to do it, and now that you can only get as far as the feet of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building is the place to go. But be warned! Even buying tickets on-line won't save you from spending, literally, hours in line. If you want to get there for a specific time, say, sunset, get in line _well_ in advance - at least two hours. A second warning: skip the Sky Ride. It's nothing more than a video of the top New York sites and involves yet more waiting around and being herded through lines.

Oh, so much fun. If you shop at Sak's make sure you sign up for the credit card to get the discount - your purchases go on whatever card you want and you can always cancel the card later. Even if you don't buy, you can get a makeover in cosmetics, have gorgeous men ply you with fragrances, and window shop 'til you drop.
