Amersfoort is situated in the centre of the Netherlands and is therefore an important junction of roads and railroads.
Only half an hour by train from Amsterdam, Amersfoort is well worth to visit for a day.
Amersfoort has a old and compact city center. It origins approx. 1.000 A.D. and has about 128.000 inhabitants which makes it the 17th city of the Netherlands.
Originally the city was surounded by two city walls, the first build in the 13th centurie, the second about a centurie later.
The 'Muurhuizen' are small houses build along the inner wall. There are also a couple of gates remaining. The innerwall has 'de Kamperbinnenpoort, and the outside wall has 'Monnikendam' and 'de Koppelpoort'. |
| | There is an abundant choice of more than 250 pubs and restaurants varying from pubs serving food to pizzerias, from French, Japanese, Mexican to Flemish, from very simple to a Michelen starred restaurant (The Mariënhof).
At this moment Amersfoort has approximately 380 governmental monuments, 275 municipal monuments and 16 municipal cityscapes. |
If you like modern architecture, you should pay a visit to the suburb 'Kattenbroek'. Many different kind of houses can be find here, ranging from Fortress and Ruine houses to cube and bridge houses.
Amersfoort is called 'Keistad' (Bouldercity) and you can find several of them in the city center. The inhabitants of the city are still called 'keientrekkers' (Boulder towers) |
