Malaysia is a country in south east asia which is divided in two parts. West Malaysia is located on the peninsular between Thailand and Singapore. East Malaysia consists of about one third of the island of Borneo. It's a multiracial country, with about 58% Malay and other indigenous, 24% Chinese and 8% indian. The main religion is Muslim, but there are various other religions, omong others: Buddhist, Daoist, Hindu, Christian and Sikh. The official language is Bahasa Melayu, but there are many other languages spoken, like: English, Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainan, Foochow), Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Panjabi and Thai.English is widely spoken although it's often called Manglish because of the strong accent which at times makes it hard to understand. |
West Malaysia It's much easier to get to West Malaysia. There are many intercontinental flights to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. You can also get there over land from Thailand.
In the South there is the state of Johor. Although there is not much to see in it's capital Johor Bahru the state has some very nice tropical islands. But be aware that these islands are deserted during the monsoon season between october and march. For more info see my Pulau Tioman travelogue
Another nice place to visit is Melaka. An old town on the west coast less than two hours south of Kuala Lumpur. See my tarvelogue for some pictures.
Other places that might be worth visiting in West Malaysia are the Cameron Highlands, Taman Negara, Pulau Pinang and Pulau Langkawi. I haven't been there yet, so you got to find it out youreself. |
East Malaysia If you plan to go to East Malaysia try to plan a flight from Johor Bahru. A Malaysian city just across the border with Singapore. You can save quite a few bucks especially compared to Singapore, which is much more expensive.
Now Airasia offers cheap flights to all big citys from Kuala Lumpur.
East Malaysia is divided into two states. Sarawak and Sabah.
For now, all information on Sarawak is available on my Kuching page. I'll be adding Sabah later. |
