On my way back home i had a 7 1/2 hour transit in Amman. I didn't feel much for waiting that long at Queen Alia International Airport. While searching for some info before my flight i wasn't able to find a lot of info on the posibillities of leaving the airport so let me share my experiences.
The first thing you need to do is go to the transit/information counter to get an embarkation form. You'll have to fill in this form to get a transit visum in exchange for your boarding pass. You need to be back 1 1/2 hours before your flight.
You can exchange some money here, but the commision is rather high. Instead you might want to try one of the ATM's in the arrival hall.
Down in the arrival hall they try to pull you into a taxi. The price quickely went down from JD15 to JD10 (€15), but i didn't want a taxi so i don't know how much lower you can go.
There is a bus service to Amman for JD1,50. Busses depart every 30 minutes and it takes about 40 minutes to go to the city center.
Since i didn't know where to go i just walked abit around the bus station in different directions. Around there is not much to see, except maybe a mosque a couple of hundred meters uphill. After about 2 hours i decided to go back to the airport...
Back on the airport i had to find out where to get my boarding pass back. I heard something about terminal 2, so thats where i went.
No one could really tell me where to get my boarding pass back. First they sent me to the checkin counters. There were more then 10 such counters, but all were closed since every body had to checkin at terminal 1. I had to wait half an hour before i could check in,... But i already checked in!! Finally found someone who knew what i was talking about and within a few minutes they came to bring my boarding pass.
The airport itself is not much. A few nice looking shops, but thats it. And nobody seemed to take any notice of the no smoking signs.
