COMMON GROUND
A pagoda,a temple,a communal house,a banyan tree, and a bamboo fence;these elements are found in every traditional Vietnamese village.
Since many outsiders don't understand the difference b/w temples, communal houses and pagodas,I had best explain.
-Temples are dedicated to national heroes,Taoist saints,or the Holy Mother ( a native ,non Buddhist figure) and pagodas are devoted to the Buddha.
-A communal house is a type of DINH ,the literal translation of which is" a vast, empty space" ." heaven uses DINH as means to fedd all living creatures,Earth uses them to contain the latter, and Man use DINH as place to assemble purpose"- Ngo thi Nham,a famous 18th century scholar wrote.
