  • Between 107 and 113 the last parts of the Fori Imperiali were built by the Roman Emporer Trajan. Beside the impressive Basilica Ulpia, the Greek and Roman libraries and the famous column markets were erected, which were restored and can be visited. So walk through it to get an idea of an antique shopping mall.

  • After burning down Rome in 64 AD the Roman emporer Nero built a gigantic and very expensive new home within a very short time. Since Nero was already killed in 68 and his successors wanted to obliterate his memory Trajan filled it up and built his baths above it. In the late 15th century it was discovered and famous artists of this time like Raffael studied the murals. Therefore it became an important source of inspiration for the mannerism movement.

Christian Rome: Il Gesu - perfect example of the Baroque idea

  • The importance of the church for Baroque ecclesiastical Catholic architecture must be highlighted especially in the light of the idea of the contra reformation. The mother church of the Jesuits order gives impressive evidence of the splendour of the rich Baroque style.
The edifice was started in 1568 by Giacomo Vignola. After his death in 1573 Giacomo della Porta finished the interiour as well as the facade. In 1584 it was consecrated.
Noticeable is the altar by Andrea Pozzo (1696-1700) with the tomb of Ignazio di Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order.

  • The church Sant Ignazio is dedicated to St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. It was built between 1626 and 1650 by Orazio Grassi S.J., funded by Ludovici Cardinal Ludovisi, a nephew of Pope Gregory XV.
The rich Baroque style building is famous for two perspective ceiling paintings by Fr. Andrea Pozzo S.J.: the "Glory of Ignatius" in the nave and the false dome in the nave, which is actually canvas that is 17 metres wide. The best spot to appreciate the effect is marked on the floor.

Location: 8/a Via del Caravita / Piazza di Sant'Ignazio

Christian Rome: Santa Constanza - A 4th century Mausoleum

  • This very special church dates back to the 4th century. Originaly it was a mausoleum for princesses of the Flavian-Constantine Royal family. It became a baptistry for the nearby Basilica Constantina, which is ruined today. In 1254 it finally became a church itself.

The original parts of the rotunda are very interesting with it's non-Christian scenes (mosaics and the copy of the sarcophagus), since Constantine became the first baptised Roman emperor.

  • The Basilica di San Clemente is an unique building because of being a result of three places of worship stacked on each other. In the cellar of an ordinary Roman house a Mithras temple was installed in the 2nd century. In the fourth century, a church was built at the site, the first built in the courtyard of the existing Roman building. In the twelfth century, Pope Paschal II built a larger church above the old one, because of its earlier destruction by the Normans. A new façade was constructed in the seventeenth century.

You are not allowed to take pictures in the museum.

  • The church at the Via Nationale was built in 1873. It's extraordinary decoration was designed by the two important English Pre-Raphaelite artists Sir Edward Burne-Jones (!) and William Morris (!) as well as by George Breck.

TIP: The services are in English since St. Paul's Within the Walls is a member of the European Convocation of American Episcopal Churches of the Anglican Communion.

  • Bramante's small but very important Tempietto built in 1502 was a trendsetter for Renaissance architecture due it's uncompromising clarity.

It's located in a court next of San Pietro in Montorio, Via Garibaldi.

  • The villa itself was built between 1551 and 1553 under Julius III. Especially the famous nymphaeum by Vasari and Ammanati alone would give a perfect reason for visiting the villa.
Butit in the first place it is a museum for Etruscan art which hosts important examples to understand the culture that the Romans originated. It will definitely change your picture about the Roman culture.
