This hotel didn't promise very much from the outside. A tiny doorway squeezed between two shops, always with cab drivers and slightly undesirable characters hanging around outside. A Masai warrior guarded the doorway from his seat on an old tree stump just outside meaning you would have to squash past him with a cheery "Jambo" on the way in...he wasn't about to move for us! But at the end of the long corridor, the reception area was an al fresco wood decking affair covered with an idyllic makeshift roof filled with lush green plants in pots to give it that real jungle feel. Cast iron seats covered in comfortable cushions were scattered around with logs and rustic looking tables. The reception desk and bureau de change office were dark natural looking wooden constructions, and the signage was new and undamaged. The first thing I noticed was that this place was very clean and fairly modern, despite being so outdoorsy and rustic looking. The seats all had soft cushions in a good state of repair, and there were two restaurants and bars, one behind reception and one on the roof. The rooms were basic with mosquito nets in most rooms although these were in a bad state of repair where present. The single rooms are very small, but serve as somewhere to lay your head, and are half the price of a double. The doubles at the front of the hotel are quite large and afford excellent views of Mt Kilimanjaro (see the photo), although they can be a little noisy (note the mosque at the far end of the street in the picture.) Moshi never seems to be quiet, and even at 3am cars are revving engines and hooting horns, so perhaps bring some earplugs for a quiet life if local bustle is not wht you are looking for.
Unique Qualities: The rooftop terrace was breathtaking. We climbed the stairs to find a full and interrupted view of the mountain, more comfy chairs, a bar, restaurant and every evening, a rooftop barbeque is prepared and served for 8000 tsh per person (all you can eat) at a long table covered by a gazebo tent and romantically lit by night. I couldn't imagine anywhere better to spend my time in Moshi.

The Impala Hotel: A bit more luxury...

On our return from the Island of Zanzibar, we decided that we would like a quieter time of it, and not needing to go back to the centre of Moshi for any reason, we booked into the Impala Hotel. This was a beautiful hotel with lush green lawns and it's own swimming pool, tables on the terrace with a restaurant which seemed to be open for food and drink at almost any time, good quality rooms with air conditioning, beautiful clean tiled bathrooms and reasonable shower. We had a very pleasant evening here before we had to get up at 4am to catch our flight home, however it was a little noisy as the location of our room was directly adjacent to the hotel bar where music was playing until quite late. Despite this, we had a good night's sleep, and it was still more peaceful than the street noise outside the Kindoroko.
Unique Qualities: The pool is lovely and the outside kitchen is an interesting feature. The hotel is also very secure as the gate is closed at night and a security guard sits by it all night long.
