Beggars / Aggressive Vendors: Fake magicians or street entertainers

  • In the UK and US street entertainers like David Blaine have made it somehow acceptable for people to stop and talk to strangers who are offering to 'do a trick' for them. Do not stop for these people as they will obviously not be doing it for free. We were stopped and bracelets woven out of coloured string whilst the men spoke to us. They then demanded money from us and changed from happy and non-threatening to the exact opposite. You may be adamant that you will not part with money for beggars but if you stop at all you will be subjected to an aggressive and frightening torrent of abuse designed to get you to part with your cash. You may even find yourself distracted by what the entertainer is doing and your pocket picked by a passing child. You have been warned. We were lucky to avoid losing our possessions as we realised the danger early enough and were alert, but it is best not to get into this situation in the first place.

    Métro & Trains: Metro maze

  • Try to avoid the Metro late at night unless you know where you're going. They can be somewhat deserted and it is quite possible to get lost in the labyrinth of tunnels. Once you've taken a wrong turn, the signposts are non-existent and there's no-one to ask for directions!

Busily absorbing Paris pages for a forthcoming visit - must get out with the camera at night. Last time I was there, the cabbie tried those stunts too.
