Ludwig II. built his Bavarian Versailles...

by Henkster - last update: Apr 16, 2003

...on a beautiful island on Chiemsee

The beautiful gardens and palace of Herrenchiemsee
The Crazy Fairy-Tale King Ludwig II. built this copy of Versailles from 1878 - 1885 until he ran out of fonds and had to stop the constructions.

This is a magnificent Baroque Palace inspired by the French sun king.

For the exterior is an astonishing copy of Versailles. Apart from the palace interior, there is also the King Ludwig II Museum in one of the wings, which houses personal items of Ludwig's, as well as the plans for his buildings, both built and unfinished.

The grounds are magnificent as well, and being on an island, it is in an enchanting setting.

I had no idea there was a copy of Versailles here! It would be great to spend a leisurely day just wandering around the grounds!

Nice pictures... unfortunately I went there just once. But the place and the palace is one of the most beautiful in Germany. Bye, Alex
