Tokyo

Zojo-Ji park and temple
Now an opportunity came my way of spending a few days in Japan, a place where I thought I would never get the chance of visiting.

A long trip into the Far East and plenty of mystery awaited.

We stayed in and around the Roppongi area.

The film "Lost in Translation" gives you some idea of how I was feeling on my short trip. I was never going to sleep at the right times, always found myself walking through the streets of Tokyo at times of the morning when no one is around. Then I was coming back to the hotel and eating breakfast before going to bed. Then there was me trying my best to understand confusing signs in which I had no hope of understanding.

So I just spent my time watching was going on around me. I had no way of real interaction with the people on the streets of Tokyo but found watching them going about their daily tasks very mesmerising. The Japanese people I did meet were such charming people and very polite. This all led to a very interesting trip. Let's hope the opportunity for a revisit comes my way soon.

20th Toyota European/South American Cup

After winning the UEFA Champions League final in Barcelona on that famous night in May 1999, it meant that we qualified for the 20th Toyota European/South American Cup, which is held each year in Tokyo.

We played the South American Cup champions Palmeiras
(Brazil)
in the Tokyo National Stadium on 30th November 1999.

We won the cup with a score of 1-0, goal coming from Roy Keane. Man of the match, and a brand new car, went to Ryan Giggs. I have to say that our goalkeeper mark Bosnich deserved it more and we like to think that maybe Giggsy gave him the car keys in the dressing room afterwards!
