I went to Boulder City to visit the Hoover Dam in June 2010, on day nine of a thirteen day, four state, tour around California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. The plan was to spend three nights in San Francisco and then hire a car to head down the coast to Monterey, staying at Gilroy for the night.

Then it was off for two nights just outside Yosemite National Park, followed by two nights in Death Valley National Park, two nights in the Grand Canyon, one night in Monument Valley State Park and finally one night at Bryce Canyon National Park before leaving the car and departing back from Las Vegas. All went to plan and we had a brilliant time, putting about 2,200 on the hire car mileage.

Day Nine - Death Valley to Grand Canyon

We had just spent two great days in the hot oven that is known as Death Valley. We set off early for the seven hour trip to the Grand Canyon.

However we had decided to break up the journey by stopping off and stretch our legs at the Hoover Dam. We drove through the busy roads of Las Vegas we stopped off for a rest and a look at the Hoover Dam.

It is spectacular in its enormity and is well worth a visit.

Back on the road to the Grand Canyon

It was then back on the road. We went down east on the highway 40 and enjoyed the change in the scenery from the desert to the canyons.

The traffic, for the most part, was not too bad but very now and again we got behind a large truck or two.
