Talkeetna - It's what Alaska is all about

Talkeetna Log Cabin
Spent two days here as part of our two week holiday in Alaska.

We arrived on the bus from Denali at around 10:30am, and checked in at the Talkeetna Lodge. We then took the hotel courtesy bus, which ran all day from the hotel, to the main street of Talkeetna.

This is a fascinating spot filled with small log cabins, each with their own story.

Day One

First port of call was at the Black Dog Grill for a delicious Reindeer dog! You’ve got to get one of those! Then it was a quick tour of town in which we managed to pop into the local museum in time for the talk on how to climb up to the top of Mt McKinley, or to give its more local name Denali.

We were trying to get up to the glacier and have a landing but the weather was not decent enough and so we decided to take in a visit to the local Iditarod dogs at Sun Dog Kennels instead. We meet the dogs and took a summer sledge ride with 16 dogs hooked up, great fun. Then there was the important job of cuddling the puppies!

Then it was back to the Alaskan Lodge hotel for cocktails and a very decent dinner of halibut and salmon

Day Two

The following day we had better weather and had a spectacular trip with Talkeetna Air Taxi around Mt McKinley and a twenty minute landing on Ruth glacier.

After that adventure we needed a spot of lunch at the Roadhouse and a mooch around the shops and open air market in the main street. Then it was back to the hotel for a chill out and pack before taking the Alaskan Railroad back to Anchorage.
