Moscow is an exciting place to visit. It has a fascinating history and is just very different to most other European capital cities. I first went, in 1992, it was just after the end of the cold war and the break up of the soviet union. Things seemed to be grey and there were not many western influences other than one McDonalds and a Pizza Hut.
In 2008 things have changed a great deal. Moscow has modernised but not to the extent as to have lost all if its identity or mystery. The language is still as complicated and the local food has it's own unusual flavour.
The real problem for travellers is the costs of travelling and staying in Moscow. It’s very expensive for a direct flight from London and then you have the added joy of applying for a travel visa, which again cost you more money. |
| | Chelsea - Champions League Final 2008 My second and most recent visit to Moscow was for the UEFA Champions League Final.
Manchester United played Chelsea in the Luzhniki Stadium on 21 May 2008. It was 1-1 after extra time with United winning 6-5 on penalties. |
| | Torpedo Moscow My visit to Moscow was for the UEFA Cup game 1st Round , 2nd Leg.
Manchester United played Torpedo Moscow in the Olympic "Luzhniki" Stadium on 29 September 1992. We drew 0-0, and then proceeded to lose on penalties 5-3. It poured down with rain for the whole match.
A great trip over four days. Didn't know what to expect but found a great deal. |

| Pros: | "A European capital with a difference" | | Cons: | "You'll need a travel visa to enter and it's far too expensive to get to!" |

No, they have not moved Comrade Lenin out of his mausoleum yet... | HORSCHECK Sun Aug 24, 2008 15:42 UTC Vic, interesting little page about this fabulous metropolis. It looks like you managed to see a match of Torpedo. I was lucky enough to attend a match of Dynamo facing CSKA. | bijo69 Thu Apr 14, 2005 12:54 UTC Yes, you should visit Moscow again. It really has changed a lot since 92, but Lenin is still there... Business as usual here... | Mandy23 Sun Aug 11, 2002 20:27 UTC great photos! hope to visit some time! |
