Rome

by vichatherly - last update: Jun 16, 2009

My first visit was a holiday - no football

Rome Colosseum
We spent four nights in Rome in the Torino Hotel and then flew to Palermo, Sicily for a further four nights.

There is plenty to see and do in this beautiful city. Plenty of chances to take some spectacular holiday photo, taste some wonderful ice cream, eat some very tasty pizzas, drink some fine wine, visit some romantic restaurants and finish the evening with some beautifully strong coffee.

We spent our days wandering around the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and the Pantiles, diving in various museums when we felt the need, and obviously stopping every now and again for ice cream.

It's definitely a city worthy of coming back to time and time again.
Trevi Fountain

AS Roma

My second visit to Rome was for the UEFA Champions League Group Quarter Final 1st Leg.

Manchester United played AS Roma in the Stadio Olimpico on 4 April 2007. We lost 2-1, but managed to win the second leg 7-1, which put us through to the semi final against AC Milan.

I took the day trip option, which was very hard work. I got picked up from Dartford Tunnel at about midnight and then we drove to Manchester airport for the morning flight. Straight back to Manchester after the game and then straight back to work after getting dropped off at about 08:00. I worked all day and then got some well earned sleep.

Not much sight seeing was done on this whirlwind trip. I did manage to get an ice cream and another look at the Trevi fountain before meeting the lads and heading of to the stadium. I also made a good job of avoiding the Italian police batons which they attacked the Man Utd fans with whilst inside the stadium.

FC Barcelona - Champions League Final 2009

My third trip to Rome was a two night affair to watch the Champions League Final

Manchester United played FC Barcelona in the Stadio Olimpico on 27 May 2009. We lost 2-0.

We flew out of Luton to Cagliari, Sardinia and then to Rome Ciampino Airport. The back trip was made more interesting because we were going via Barcelona, Girona airport, with all of their fans in a celebratory mood, can't blame them really.

Pros:"Plenty to see and do, excellent weather"
Cons:"Over zealous police with their batons"
In A Nutshell:"When in Rome....enjoy the ice cream!"
