The view from the top of the big arch (La Grande Arche) is disappointing, very limited. .

At Least Do This: On the other hand, there are always cool expositions on the top floor: last summer there was one with photographs of NY and 9/11.
Alternative: Great shopping-centers at the La Défense complex.

Tourist Trap: Canal Saint Martin

My Parisian friends told me to visit the Canal Saint-Martin. It was supposed to have bars and restaurants, but I only saw a few. The place is almost boring, but you can always find something to do, like throwing stones in the water.

At Least Do This: Nothing in Paris is 100% boring, and interesting, unexpected situations may always arise from nowhere there. While I was walking along the Canal, a goofy French man, who was with a French woman, just turned to me and asked me if I had liked a certain movie (not Amélie), as if it was normal to just start a conversation with strangers!! Then I showed him my camera and told him how I was just visiting, or "living" in Paris for a short period of time (it's nice to say we live in Paris, not everybody has to know it's just for 40 days!)...

The worst hotel. It isn'tas shown on photos and video. Cubicle, smelly rooms, rude staff. Front desk was not allowed to call a shuttle to airport because they only sell Air France bus. Stay in somewhere else to avoid wasting your money | Ipanema_Princess Mon Jun 27, 2005 22:39 UTC
