Ypres (as it was known in WW1)

by deadites - last update: Dec 12, 2004

I didn't stay overnight in Ypres or even eat for that matter so resto and accomodation recommendations by word of mouth (we gathered info just in case we stayed overnight).

Took the train in from Brugge, via Kortrijk, then rented a bike at the train station and biked out to visit the WW1 war memorials.

While it was fascinating to see such a strong part of our world's "recent" history up close and personal, it was also deeply depressing to see the graves and memorials to the countless lives that were lost defending the town of Ypres from the advancing German army. Ypres and it's surrounding lands was the only area not taken over by the Germans and the British Allied forces fought hard to keep it that way at great loss.

I took more pictures here, than anywhere else on this vacation.. Fascinating.. Depressing..

Pics and info are posted in the travelogue.

Je me souviens.
Recently, my daughter participated in the annual November 11th Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa. Her choir performed In Flanders Field for the surviving WW1 and WW2 vets as the vets bowed their heads in remembrance.
In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Ieper (and surroundings) indeed is a must if one wants to imagine what WWI has been like.

Flanders Field Museum is indeed an impressive monument in Belgium. Greetz from Belgium.
