Bern has often been called the capital of the Alps, evoking a picture of a solemn, village-like demeanor. True, as a city it fails when compared to the vast loudness of Zürich or the proud diplomacy of Geneva. The Bernese themselves are not exactly lavished with compliments, being described as slow and conservative by some and downright unfriendly by others. Bern likes to keep to itself, but that shouldn't stop anyone from paying this little capital a thorough visit. |
| | Little Info - Bern actually burnt down in 1405 - so the sandstone buildings we all admire so much are in all actuallity not much older than that. - There are 6 kilometers of arcades making this one of the longest covered promenades in Europe. And very useful for staying dry but a nightmare to walk through when it is raining. - Toberlone chocolate actually does come from here. Cuckoo clocks don't. |
