Trincomallee, on Sri Lanka's east coast, is not exactly a popular tourist destination. I was privillaged to live and work there from April 1991 until November 1994 - and have been pining to go back eversince. As this area is technically in a problem zone due to the war in Sri Lanka, please check with the authorities in Colombo to see what the current situation there is. When I was there, we had the occaisional tourist visiting us at home - some who had unwittingly wandered over by bus, others who were sick of the west coast and wanted to see something else, and believe it or not, a bus load of German package tourists, who had been told that travelling to Trinco was as safe as houses - and were terrifed when they found the town was pretty much war scarred and very much checkpointed. However, if you get the opportunity to visit this wonderful place, than do so. Trincomallee is unforgettable.
