Hangout in Davis Square. ... and other Somerville, MA General Tips

Favorite Thing: Hangout in Davis Square. Perhaps the best Square in Somerville for density of pubs, restaurants, coffee houses, bookstores, theatre. Davis Square really has it no matter what time of day you are there. Most the action in Davis Square is along Elm Street, so, just walk up and down Elm to find what you are looking for.

Fondest Memory: I have too many good nights in Davis Square to pick one 'fondest' memory... I guess the best way to explain my 'fondness' for Davis Square is that it is a place where it's easy to relax with friends. The pubs and restaurants are a lot of fun and not pretentious the way the downtown Boston scene can get (note: Boston is not a particularly pretentious city compared to say, Dallas).

Favorite Thing: Although it's not a square, the area where Washington Street turns into Kirkland and both are intersected by Beacon Street is great place to hang out...it's where Somerville meets Cambridge, so you get the cool people from Somerville interacting with the Tibetan freedom fighters of Harvard...

There are several good restaurants (most notably, Dali) and some of my favorite Slumerville bars/pubs (The Thristy Scholar and The Kirkland).

Fondest Memory: I have several fond memories of this part of town, but most I really shouldn't write about...

Favorite Thing: Although it's a small square, I think Teele Square is up and coming, especially as a place to live. There are just enough restaurants and bars to keep you happy 'close to home' and the close proximity to Davis Square (the closest 'T' stop) gives you everything else you would want.

Fondest Memory: One overly drunken night in Teele Square is where the 'fire game' got started. I think it was one of those nights where we hit Rudy's for Tequila (and dinner) and then ended up over at P.J. Ryan's for beers, which generally seems like a good idea. Anyway, one of my friends, Stegs, decided that it would be fun to 'catch' me on fire! Naturally, after having consumed some high octane Tequilas, I didn't think the 'fire-game' was too cool... Fortunately, there was a glass of water near which dosed the flame(s) and 'accidentally' got on Stegs...

Favorite Thing: Porter Square, this square is probably technically in Cambridge, but seems to be split between Cambridge and Somerville...regardless, it's the Somerville people who really make Porter Square what it is today...

Fondest Memory: If you're looking for another "last call" and you're not too claustrophobic, check out the Toad for beers and music, I had an out-of-body experience there one night...not good... Christopher's is another great bar in the Porter Square area that I would frequent for their extensive beer list (they have good chowda too)...many a political speech did I watch on the big screens there with forever skeptic Mr. O'Shea...
