Boston has been around nearly 400 years (incorporated Bostonia in 1630) and naturally this lends itself to having a rich history. Although this may not seem like a long time compared to the history of other cities (or nations), but for the U.S. 400 years is about as far back as you can go. So, with this much history, much of it architectural, simply walking around Boston is like walking through a museum. A museum of an evolving city that has in many ways remained on the cutting edge, but in some respects not changed much since it was founded. You can literally experience something from each period.

Cow paths of the early farmers have turned into today's busy city streets. Parade grounds for British soldiers during our colonial times have turned into city parks (Boston Common, Lexington Green). Modern skyscrapers are interwoven into a cityscape with seventeenth and eighteenth architecture. Neighborhoods developed by waves of immigration in the mid nineteenth century maintain rich, ethnic cultural traditions that reach back to country's such as Ireland, Italy, Russia, Portugal and more recently Haiti, the Dominican Republic, India, China and some Southeast Asia countries like Vietnam and Cambodia.

Faneuil Hall & other downtown buildings

I moved to Boston in March of 2000 for work; and, unfortunately, that work has comprised most of my time since then. However, things have started to slow down at my company (an Internet Firm) so I now have "free time" to enjoy Boston and its surrounding environs.

Well, that last sentence was written at the end of 2001 and now (by May 2002) I find myself among the ranks of the unemployed… So, other than the three and half weeks that I spent road-tripping around Canada’ Maritime Provinces and the week that I spent in the Canadian Rockies, I am finding renewed interest in seeing Boston and its surrounding communities. It is all too possible that my next job will take me away from Boston, so, I need to see and do so much as possible in the next few weeks... To get started I am re-arranging my Boston page (that means actually trying to finish it) while creating new pages for the surrounding districts of Cambridge and Somerville as well as some of my favorite quintessential New England towns around Boston.

The Charles River & Boston Skyline

Eventually, my Boston Page will incorporate my favorite activities/places in Boston and some of the surrounding districts under the "general" sections as well as spots further out in the state of Massachusetts under the "off the beaten path" sections. More details and photos might be found on my other pages that are dedicated to those areas (e.g. my Somerville or Cambridge page)... And don't forget about the travelogues for my photo tours of Boston...

I actually snapped the big photo above out of an airplane window, so, it's a little fuzzy. Regardless, you can see the downtown core, the Charles River, the new bridge that is part of the Big Dig and several neighborhoods. Charlestown in the lower right corner, the North End just below the downtown core and Beacon Hill, the Boston Common and the Back Bay are to the right of the downtown core.
