Freiburg, Germany-©2000 T.Darin Paulson Ich hätte gerne eine Fonduegeschirr. A beautiful little city which I thought was left untouched during the war, was actually pummeled on the 27th and 28th of November in 1944, by a total of 341 Lancasters and 10 Mosquitos from the RAF with only 1 Lancaster being lost. Freiburg was not an industrial town and had not been bombed before by the RAF. It was attacked on this night because it was a minor railway centre and because many German troops were believed to be present in the town. Flak defences were light and 1,900 tons of bombs were dropped on Freiburg in 25 minutes. Photographs showed that the railway targets were not hit but that the main town area was severely damaged. What I found most interesting on my visit many years later, was the existing water/river system running through the old town. Apparantly, if a man accidently steps into one of the tiny canal's running along the side's of the streets in the pedestrian zone, he will marry the first single woman he meets. (an odd little tale since they use to be used as the sewage system) My feet remained dry unfortunately, but it was astounding how many obviously single men I witnessed jumping in and out of these tiny little rivers of destiny: and these weren't just the drunken University students.

And a name that's (almost) my namesake. Yow. | richiecdisc Tue Jul 29, 2003 00:46 UTC Oldest pub in Germany is quite a claim but the Schwäbische Oompah Band more than makes up for it. ;) |
