Welcome to my India Pages

by holyman - last update: Sep 14, 2002

India, a 5000 year old civilisation, is a land of over a billion people. It is surrounded by the Himalayas towards the north and the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean towards the West, East and South (covering over 7500 Kms of coastline). With a size more than a third of the US, this is a country of great diversity. Diversity in religion (Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism and many others), diversity in culture (28 States and seven centrally administered Union Territories, each with their own unique identity) and diversity in language (17 major languages with their own script and almost 850 dialects) all add up to make this great nation.

From the great mountain ranges in the North to the ocean in the South, India is a kaleidoscopic riot of colours. However, no single icon is as representative of India, as the Taj Mahal (see picture), one of the greatest man made monuments on Earth.

With the passage of time, I will try to tell you interesting bits about my country, so stay tuned and welcome to my land!

Thanks for the nice comments, Anil. Enjoy your trip - it's really beautiful in Scotland. I hope to get to India in my lifetime - fingers crossed!
