UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

Land of my youth... forever a part of me.

Our front yard in Kano - Dry Season
3 days before my first birthday, I arrived in Lagos, Nigeria. For the next 15 years, and even beyond that, this West African country would be my home. My dad had just completed his graduate studies in the UK and been offered a job as a teacher in a remote town called Oturkpo. I don't have many memories of that place, nor of Jos which was our next stop a couple of years later. No.. what I remember the most about Nigeria were the years spent in Kano, where we had moved soon after I turned 5.

In a small village called Dawakin Kudu, 30 kilometers outside the ancient trading city of Kano, I spent my innocent youth (or maybe not so innocent... according to my mother). No TV stations, no phones and sometimes no electricity or running water. Every winter, the Sahara desert could come calling at our doorstep, bringing swirling sand storms. Yet, it was the happiest place on earth. My friends and played as we should have... without a care in the world. When I wasn't playing, I had my nose buried in a book. Dickens, Blyton, Shakespeare, Austen.... And at night, I would lie outside staring at the Milky Way for hours.
Harmattan Season - The Sahara comes for a visit
I was a daydreamer. I am still a daydreamer. Life is good...

Hmm...there was a study concerned w/ the Mafia Island & the Mafia Channel which together form a subbasin in the north-south elongated coastal basin of Tanzania. What was that "fable" you told us at Ramblas in SF?The Princess of Tanzania? Just curious.....
