We only had a few hours to stroll round Bern so had just a general impression. A lot of people on VT have suggested seeing the bear pits. I don’t regret seeing them but it does bother me that such a regal animal is kept in a scruffy concrete den with nothing to challenge or interest it. There is a picture in "Tourist Trap".Here a passer by was throwing grapes to the bear, he seemed to be enjoying catching them – no doubt his only stimulus all day. Sorry, but I think bears should be kept in a natural (or at least a stimulating) environment. Other than that Bern looked like a superb place for shopping and no doubt is interesting if you enjoy architecture. We thought it had a more relaxed feel than Zurich but were still glad that we decided to stay in the beauty of the Bernese Oberland. Bern had been my first choice but I had been put off by the hotel prices. We stayed in Kandersteg and were extremely pleased with our choice (more details on my Switzerland page). |
