Le Meridien Apollo: Le Meridien Apollo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We booked as part of a package paid for by loyalty card points so I didn't pay too much attention to the price. In our room the notice indicated that it could be up to £250 per night! Some tour operators do 3 nights for the price of 2 and a free upgrade to an executive room at less popular times of year.

Unique Qualities: It doesn't look much from the outside but don't be put off by that. Inside the rooms and furnishings are of a high standard. We were lucky to enjoy the best hotel room we have ever had. It was a junior suite overlooking the canals. It is worth the supplement for a canal view - the picture is taken from our room. There is a very pleasant canal side terrace bar. The hotel is out of the centre in a mostly residential district but there are good tram connections.

Crowne Plaza Amsterdam City Centre: Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The price has gone up a lot over the last few years, and I would say dont expect change from £100/160 Euro a night for a double room. The best deals will be Weekender plus at certain times of year (eg Jan-Feb). Last time we stayed there we saved money by taking room only and having breakfast at Dimitri's Cafe Prinsenstraat 3 (tel 627-9393). It was a few minutes walk and the fruit and muesli and cooked breakfast were delicious and good value.

Unique Qualities: Rooms and breakfast of the standards that you would expect of a Crowne Plaza and in a central location for the old town.
It may not be so suitable for anyone who likes to get away from the revelry as it is close to the Damrak and so lots of tacky stores and sex shops.

  • Have a look at the website. If you can get a weekender plus rate it will be much cheaper, but it is only at certain times of year. You can register on the site to receive emails alerting you to offers.

Unique Qualities: Good standard of rooms and likely to be substantially cheaper than the Crowne Plaza.

I completely agree with your comments about The Night Watch. It is a marvellous piece, beautifully presented. I found being close to it was mesmeric. Greetings from Ireland

Well, your tips are accurate and useful, and I agree absolutely with your point of view, Amsterdam is not for whom is looking for calm days ;-)
