Like most people we visited Plzen to pay homage to the Pilzner Urquell brewery. There’s no doubt that they make one of the best beers in the world, but we found the brewery tour slightly disappointing. I had expected to see the old wooden vats still in use but instead found a modern, mostly stainless steel set up. We didn’t even get a free drink at the end. Perhaps it was just that we had been so well looked after at the Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam, we’ve been spoiled.
There doesn’t seem to be much else to attract tourists away from the major cities and during our visit the air was really thick with fumes (from all the old trabants). Anyone with respiratory difficulties should check the weather forecasts before deciding to visit – a windy day might be best.
