The Rhone Valley

The Valais is the Canton which surrounds the Rhone Valley. It contains most of Switzerland's 4000 metre mountains, including the distinctive Matterhorn.
It is completely enclosed by high mountains and benefits from a rainshadow effect, the localised climate is dry and sunny.
The Lonely Planet guide to walking in Switzerland warns that in the Valais walkers should "beware of getting too much sun"!
This year we travelled to Verbier and were surprised that in the lovely climate at the end of June the place was almost deserted.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Warm, dry and sunny - not what you expect in the Alps
Cons:Panoramas can be spoilt a little by ski runs, cable cars and pilons

We walkked down from the Rothorn too to the lakes - wonderful sunshine. Earth pyramid is amazing!

Yes, the Matterhorn is a bit hard to ignore. Lovely pics again.
