The budget airlines are offering very cheap flights from the UK to Faro (see “transportation”) and this will bring Lisbon into consideration for a cheap and unusual city break. I found our visit to Lisbon very interesting, but I hardly recognise the descriptions put on it by some of the travel brochures. Parts of Lisbon are beautiful but it is also the nearest I’ve seen in Europe to third world poverty levels. To give an example, one travel brochure said “Losing your way in the old quarter opens the door to a multitude of new experiences!” Indeed, but probably not what everyone wants from a holiday. The Portuguese authorities have recognised that there is such a widespread drug problem that they decided to remove criminal penalties for drug users. In the back streets of the old town it is apparently common to see heroin addicts queuing for their supplier to sell them the fix. Please see my travelogue for a glimpse of what you may otherwise see there. |
