Out of all the destinations I have stayed Bolzano- Bozen is my favourite. It is a smart and classy town in a stunningly beautiful setting. With a car it is easy to take day trips into the Dolomites and even if you prefer the luxury of a hotel rather than backpacking and staying in rifuges you can still get some superb views of the mountains. There is an excellent range of walks available, from strolls lasting an hour or two up to traverses across the peaks and valleys taking you through desolate countryside over several days. If you’re not particularly fit there are cable cars on some of the high peaks. The Marmolade gives especially impressive views.
Although Bolzano is now well inside the Italian border it feels very German and the German language is spoken alongside Italian. Road signs are in both languages and I think that the town captures the best of both worlds. It has the cleanliness and tidiness that I associate with the Germanic culture but you can enjoy wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables and all of the garlic and olive oil that goes with Italian cooking.
Some of the suburbs may not be so pretty and are quite industrial but the centre of town is elegant, with beautiful buildings sat within tiny vineyards. There are grapes growing everywhere. It feels relaxed and we were amazed at how many times motorists stopped to waive us across the road.

Very informative page. I'll be visiting Bolzano for the first time in about 2 weeks. I tried your hotel, but the cheapest room is €164! Too much! Thanks for the excellent tips (books especially)! I can't wait to share my experience in Bolzano (Bozen).
