The Old Capital Of The Million Elefants! This is one of the most exciting and relaxing places I've ever been. You can breath the quiet of life at every step you make. It is a village where seem that the jungle gets into town, is green everywhere you look at, the pic was taken from a little hill in the middle of town, it is full of temples and the Mekong its at its feet. Seems that time has stoppedand that won't run any more.

Champasak is a village south of Pakse on the way down of the Mekong River in direction to Dong Kong islands area. Here you can find a superb Khemer Temple sited up-hill. I would recommend to reach it by renting a bike, its a 3 km light ride following down the Mekong river, there is a temple and some Budhas on the way to it. Arriving to the temple you will be surprised by a great square pool, and you find thee a Royal building, This temple was sacred and kings used to came here on perelinage onece a year, they thought the mountain was sacred. To reach the temple you have to go up the stairs that has been cleared from the forest, some parts of it still eated by plants and trees. the most impresive is the site of the temple and its view of the area. The temple is pread inside the forest. it is rich on sculptures and carvings. The Village of Champasak is easy reacable by boat from and to Pakse, the road has been updated, but is at the other side of the river, so you have to cross it by boat anyway, there are a few houses that are runned as hostels they are comfortable and with all facilities, and there is a little hotel with a restaurant overlooking the Mekong river. it a good place to wait for the down having a Lao cofee.

Travel along the Mekong river, at any of its places. Mekong river offers you a lot of possibilities, but the best one is to make an excursion on it. Visiting any of the thousand villages that are spread along its banks, travel through the Si Phan Don islands area, from the northern tribe villages that would take ages if you do by any other mean of transport, or make half day excursion to Pak ou caves from Luang Phrabang.
