Hornachos, my grand mother's village

by aeroarce - last update: Sep 4, 2006

Dolores Cano Hidalgo

My grand mother quit this village when she was just a teenager, she was born in 1918, she was the last of 5 child and just a few years after she was born her mother died of a flu epidemy that devasted most of spain's rural area when she was pregnant of my grand mother. After her mother death his father got married with his sister-in-law ait was not very well seen a widow alone with kids. As her new mother (that my grandma always called her aunt and never mother) didn't like the rural life they decided to move to the big city and they come to madrid just at the beggining of the II Spanish Republich in the early 1930's. She is called Dolores, but we call her Lole, and I love her.

Hornachos an ancient village

Hornachos dates form Roman Times when the Silver trade route crossed from Huelva and Seville to The north of Spain crossing all extramadura passing by Merida and many other villages. And Even Before had its importance in its Sierra are found some prehistoric cave paintings. There where some mines in the area that gave importancce and wealthness to the village and its highest time was when the moorish where in the city where they build a fortress and improved the urban structures of the city. After the muslim expeling of Spain the moorish villagers of Hornachos founded today's capital of morrocco: Rabat, they took their houses keys with them and keep with them for ages. afterwards and only at the late 1800´s got some importance when some foreigners and specially the british discovered and worked on mining. today it is a big village with its importance at tierra de barros.
