Korean War Memorial: War Memorial. A great museum...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: War Memorial. A great museum (though you might want to skip the first floor if pressed for time). I learned a lot about the Korean War. I came close to crying quite a few times. Make sure you read the story about the 10 soldiers. The stature in front of the museum of the two brothers (the older an officer for the North and the younger a soldier from the South) embracing on the battlefield is really moving.

Fondest Memory: South Koreans are very friendly (remember I live in Japan). Many strangers came up to me and said "Welcome to Korea" or asked me how I liked the country. I really felt welcome.

Korea House & Namsan Hanok Folk Village: Namsum Village of Traditional...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Namsum Village of Traditional Houses. If you can?ft get out to Folk Village, you can still visit traditional homes near the city center. The homes were moved from around the country and really give you a feel of how the people lived.

Gyeongbokgung (Palace): Folk Museum in Gyeongbokgung...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Folk Museum in Gyeongbokgung Palace. I wanted to visit the National Museum but it?fs closed on Mondays, so I visited the Folk Museum. The LP description doesn?ft make it sound very interesting, but it has great exhibits on the history and life of Korean people. It explains various ceremonies and how kimchi is made, and it also has costumes and handicrafts.

Gyeongbokgung (Palace): Gyeongbokgung Palace (next to the National Museum)
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Favorite Thing: This home for a king was turned into a zoo and amusement park with many building destroyed by the Japanese. In part of the restoration of the former dignity of the palace, a new Royal Guard Changing Ceremony is held every two hours (except in winter). Gyeongbokgung station (exit 5).

    Tapgol Park: Tapgol Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: This park celebrates the Declaration of Independence from Japanese occupation. The last time I was here there were photo exhibits of the horrors perpetrated by the Japanese. This time the mood was much more festive, with colored lanterns in celebration of Buddha’s birthday. There are always lots of older men gathered discussing history and politics. JongRo 3 station (exit 1 I think)

Other Place to Go: Seoul Cinema Town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The nearby Picadilly and … theaters were closed so this one was packed the couple of times I went by. It is so cheap to see movies here (remember I am coming from Japan)!! There is also assigned seating. Walking from JongRo3 station lots of older ladies will be screaming at the people walking by. Don’t be alarmed, they aren’t angry they are just scalpers. Scalpers for the movies – only in Korea!!.
