Ho Chi Minh City Warnings Or Dangers

Traffic: The First Step
  • Tip Rating:
  • The traffic.....don't run across the street......pedestrians do not, I repeat, DO NOT have the right of way! Rather, when crossing the street, don't wait for a break in traffic; simply walk into the melee and keep going at a steady pace. Traffic will go around you. It's a little scary at first, (actually, it's downright heart-stopping) but it works.

Traffic: Need More Eyes In HCMC?
  • Tip Rating:
  • During times of congestion, it is a known fact that Vietnamese motocycles tend to automatically find their way to the sidewalk as an alternation to the busy, hectic streets before them.

My advice: When walking during rush hour in HCMC, make sure you keep your eyes peeled. If walking into traffic, get outta there!! If walking with the flow, don't make sudden moves or swing body parts you have the intention to keeping.

    "Girls": Kotoeys in Saigon??

  • My Crew On Dong Khoi

  • For the male solo traveler in Saigon, while walking down Dong Khoi street (only place it happened to me), you might be approached by “female” cyclists asking whether or not you would like to follow them for a drink. I’ve never been approached by a 100% female driver before so ultimately, it is your decision or curiosity as to what happens for the remainder of the night.

Clothes & Accessories: Don't Forget Your Shades
  • Tip Rating:
  • Situated relatively close to the equator, Saigon’s sun might be able to do a bit of damage to your precious eyes so do yourself a favor by bringing a good pair of sunglasses to protect yourself from the harmful ultraviolet rays. I personally brought 2 pairs myself but conveniently lost my favorite pair during an excursion to the Mekong and flawlessly stepping and disfiguring my second 2 days later.

Sunglasses are widely sold in Saigon but make sure you purchase one from a highly reputable shop or just bring one from home!

    Clothes & Accessories: Laundry Service

  • For those travelers who really appreciate clothing, it might not be wise to bring your most valued articles to Vietnam. The sun, dust and dirt makes new items look used in a matter of days. Never once have I had a good experience with laundry service in Saigon regarding whites. They do not seperate colors…

    Thieves & Beggers: Thieves
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be very careful with valuables in Vietnam and use common sense. The little boys and girls wanting to sell you postcards eye your wallet with eyes of a hawk along with quick fingers.

When walking along the street, keep loose articles close to your body because there has been an epidemic of moto scooter driveby snatchings. My mom sets a good example. Personally, I did not have a run in with any of this other than my shoe being stolen by a cute and innocent looking kid.
