Ho Chi Minh City Tourist Traps

The money-thing: Duel Pricing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't be shocked when a foreigner gets charged much more than the locals. Vietnamese life is hard and they try to earn as much as possible even if they have to be dishonest. Remember, the average Vietnamese family most likely doesn't earn 200Usd a month. If you feel you are not being treated fair, just walk away from the purchase.

  • Tip Rating:
  • If you must give money to a begger on the street, make sure you do it discreetly. It's well known that if you give to one, a horde will hunt you down till they empty your pocket. Not that it's bad or anything, it's just that repeating the process daily can really leave you dry on cash.

    The money-thing: Shoe Shine Sir??
  • Tip Rating:
  • A regular shoe shine cost a local 3000 dong. A foreigner should pay no more than 5000.

At Least Do This: When you are in need of a shoe shine, make sure you find someone you know, have a friend introduce someone for you or let the shoe shine boy shine one shoe at a time to ensure he does not run off with your prized possesions. I had to learn that the hard way.

    Over-pricing: Saigon Trade
  • Tip Rating:
  • Avoid the coffee shop at the top of the most dominating building, at 33 stories, the Saigon Trade Center. Prices are quoted in USD and are absolutely ridiculous, for Vietnam standards. Heck, they're ridiculous for any budget traveller's standard!

    Over-pricing: Binh Khoi Tourist Village
  • Tip Rating:
  • Over priced everything! I have to admit the scenery in the area is one of a kind in Saigon but tourists will definitely not get the feel of Vietnam.

Alternative: Pham Ngu Lao is a better alternative!
