Well, instead of staying at a hotel, we rented a whole house on a monthly basis which came up to roughly 400 Cdn/month (I should base everything in US dollars huh? We Canadians are Unknown). This includes a 4 story house with a bathroom on every level. I thought it was cheaper than staying in a hotel and you get more privacy and a place to park my moped was a bonus. When I go back, I'll probably be doing the same thing....

Pham Ngu Lao: Backpacker's District

The backpackers district of Saigon. Here you have restaurants of different styles and class, cheap airfare, laundry service, souvenir shopping, internet service, etc.
Unique Qualities: Similar to that of Khao San road in Bangkok, cheap hotels and guesthouses can be found on De Tham, Pham Ngu Lao, Bui Vien and the surrounding area. It is also within walking distance of Ben Thanh. A huge market clustered with anything you can think of, from Vietnamese silk to coffee beans, flowers to stonewashed jeans, all at relatively low prices. A must see for first timers to Vietnam!

During French colonial times, the Rex began as a two-story garage located in the heart of commercial center of Saigon. Between 1959 and April 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Ung Thi, a Vietnamese couple purchased and renovated it into a six-story building with 100 guestrooms and renamed it as Rex Trading Center. The US Information services rented much of the premises for office and residential use. The remaining space housed three cinemas, a cafeteria, a dance hall and a library. A more recent development is a 3,000 sq. m expansion to build more facilities and upgraded the Rex into a five-star hotel.

For those of you who plan to stay in HCMC for periods longer than a month and looking to find cheap accomodations rather than spending hundreds at hotel prices, try contacting Van Bui Ngoc. He owns a hotel-style house for the purpose of renting to foreigners and making a decent living. A former english teacher, his command of English is remarkable with no room for misunderstandings! Situated in Cholon, D5, the cost of renting for a month is 1,000,000d, roughly 65USD.
