  • Unfortunately, Thailand offers a great number of nasties such as Hepatitis A and B, Polio, Cholera, Typhoid, Malaria, Dengue Fever, Etc. Make sure you consult your physician before making your first trip out to Thailand. That pretty much goes for all countries in South East Asia as well. The one most deadly, if the right precautions are not taken, is HIV. Thailand used to go by the name of ‘Aids Capital of the World’.

  • Possession of any amount of drugs, be it large or small could result in a fine and/or imprisonment. Drug trafficking or attempting to cross international borders with drugs in your possession carries extreme penalties, including execution.

    Warnings Or Dangers: Public Phones

  • Unlike what I am accustomed to, payphones in Thailand require constant deposit of coins. To this day, I still don’t really know how to use a payphone in Thailand (yeah, I’m that stupid) when using a public phone, make sure you carry lots of 5 and 10 baht coins if you are planning to chat a little longer than your average “hello, goodbye”.

Not exactly sure but I think 10 Baht gets you 2 minutes of talk time. During the end of my visit, telephones were my worst enemy in Thailand!

    Taxi scams: Mad Taxis

  • When in need, try to go out of your way and hail down a taxi on the street. They will most definitely turn the meter on without your asking. Avoid Taxis that stay stationed at street corners and high touristy areas. Those are the ones you will have to negotiate pricing with in which they will most likely end up with the benefit.

  • Situated relatively close to the equator, Bangkok's sun might be able to do a bit of damage to your precious eyes so do yourself a favor by bringing a good pair of sunglasses to protect yourself from the harmful ultraviolet rays.

Jewellery and Gem Scams.: A Little Story

  • I once took a Tuk-Tuk to one of the many wats located in Bkk and as I was praying, my driver stepped away to use the boy's room when I was approached by a "lawyer". This lawyer spoke decent English, telling me about this great deal about a gem necklace he had just purchased in which he travels to Australia where he sells them for twice the amount in which he purchases. When he leaves, my driver conveniently appears and asks me where I want to go next and so I reply, "My hotel". Next thing I knew, we arrive at the gem store. I tell my driver to go back to my hotel but for some reason, he wouldn't acknowledge me and so we sit there, me annoyed while he frustrated.

    The moral, use common sense.
