  • Favorite Thing: The Baht is the currency used in Thailand. There are 100 Satangs in 1 Baht. Notes are in dominations of 1000 (Grey), 500 (Purple), 100 (red), 50 (blue), 20 (green), and 10 (brown). There are 10, 5 and 1 Baht coins and 50 and 25 Satang.

1 USD nets you roughly 43 Baht depending on the exchange rate. A bottled water cost in the vicinty of 7-10 baht.

  • Favorite Thing: Thais are generally the most outgoing and friendly folks I have ever seen or had the opportunity to meet. They are almost always approachable and willing to lend a hand when in need. With a population of about 10 Million, Bangkok is definitely the perfect destination for solo travelers who want to see the world but are too afraid to take the first step!

Don Muang International Airport: Departure Tax

  • Favorite Thing: All international flight passengers are required to pay a service charge and VAD (value added tax) prior to boarding your plane which comes to 500 Baht. So when you're leaving Bkk, make sure you keep an additional 500 in your pocket.

    General Tips: Thai Visas

  • Favorite Thing: Pretty much everyone needs a visa to enter the Thai kingdom. Luckily however, citizens from most countries can receive a 30 day visa upon arrival at the Don Muang airport free of charge. If in doubt, check with the nearest Thai embassy located to you.

The official Thai name of Bangkok is in the Guiness Book of Records as the longest place name in the world. If you want to impress your friends, try memorizing this:
Krungthep Mahanakorn Boworn Rattanakosin Mahintharayuttha Mahadilokpop Noparatratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniveymahasathan Amornpiman Avatransathit Sakkathattiay-avisnukarmprasit.

What it means: "Great city of angels; the repository of divine gems; the great land unconquerable; the grand and prominent realm; the royal and delightful capital full of nine noble gems; the highest royal dwelling and grand palace; the divine shelter and living place of reincarnated spirits."

The city is just better known as Krung Thep or City of Angels.

  • Favorite Thing: It is not uncommon to see elephants and their trainers roaming the streets of Bangkok. For a small fee, you could feed the baby elephant a few snacks.

  • Favorite Thing: Thais are exceptionally tolerant to gay and lesbian travelers. There is a gay festival held every year in November in which gay locals and tourists celebrate being who they are.
