Tourist Trap: Madame Taussauds is not a...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Madame Taussauds is not a tourist trap within itself, but the queues outside will trap you for hours!!! It is MUCH better to buy your tickets in advance, or through another campany as you can then walk straight in and avoid the queues. In the summer, these can waste your time for an hour or more. The Planetariem next door also sells tickets to Taussauds, or get them from your hotel. I bought mine from a London Tour bus when I bought my travel ticket. This is another good idea, as you can get off and on wherever you want throughout the day and enjoy a commentary of the sights that you pass.

Tourist Trap: Theatre tickets to the West...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Theatre tickets to the West End shows are really very expensive - £40 for the stalls....

At Least Do This: If you aren't too bothered about which specific production you see, then go to the last minute ticket sellers dotted around Leicester Square in the late afternoon and evening. The theatres tell them how many seats they have left at each show and the booths sell them on at a reduced price. If you get there early enough you may be lucky in getting tickets to what you really want to see.

Some theatres sell best available tickets for £10 if you buy them directly from the theatre on the day. These sell out very quickly so get there as soon as they open (usually 10am). I tried this out at 11.00 at the Savoy, to see Porgy and Bess and I was too late for matinee tickets but they still had a lot for the evening.
Alternative: For alternative theatre, try the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn, or watch performing arts in the open air in Covent Garden.

Tourist Trap: Kentish Town City Farm: more of a waste of space
  • Tip Rating:
  • I had high hopes when I found out that I could actually go to a farm in the middle of London, having not even seen a cow for the last few months. However I was disappointed to find that the whole place is a complete waste of space. To make the place more 'rural' they leave nettles and other mess along the narrow paths, they have a 'garden' complete with fallen down greenhouse and weeds, etc.

They do have quite a lot of animals, but sadly they are crammed into very small enclosures, and the whole place seems to be a backbone for their riding school. Meaning everything else is lacking. Quite nice for tiny kids who dont know any better as they get to shove bits of bread into the poor pigs' mouths and pull the sheeps' tails etc.

Alternative: If you feel the need, go to the city farm at stratford - well kept, happy animals etc...
