If you are here with children, and want to get out of the city itself, there are loads of options within an hours drive.
Thorpe Park and Chessington World of adventures are the nearest theme parks (Alton Towers is the best, but it is a 4 and a1/2 hour drive).
Whipsnade zoo and safari park is the sister zoo to London zoo, and is in Bedfordshire. Also in Bedfordshire are Woburn Abbey and parkland. Milton Keynes has the Snowdome for indoor skiing and snowboarding on real snow, and also Gulliver's Land - a brilliant theme park for children up to 13 years old that is only £7.30 for entry. The park is next to Willen Lake, which has waterskiing, pedal boats, a little sit-on train and plenty of space to run about.
In Windsor there is the castle if course, but if your kids will find that boring there is also Legoland theme park, which is really good fun.
Brighton is only an hour on the train, with its funky shops, cafes and beach - Littlehampton is a bit further along the coast and has a sandy beach, land train and funfair.
The best way to find out what is on in London is to buy Time Out magazine, available in most newsagents in the capital. It has pages of listings for kids stuff, bars, shows, clubs etc......
