Every visitor to London should buy Time Out Magazine - it is the bible to what is going on in town. It has every theatre production, cinema time, concert, activity listed for the week with reviews and special offers. Not buying it means missing out on some of the more obscure events and shows. If not Time Out, then pick up one of the free copies of TNT from boxes in the streets - it is aimed at antipodean visitors and also has a lot of information about things going on in London.

I love Hampstead and Hampstead Heath - they are the places I go when I want to escape the city. Walking through Hampstead you will still feel as if you are in London, but it has such a different character - independent shops, quiet roads with huge houses, people in wellies walking their dogs! The heath is a massive area of parkland, quite rough terrain in some places with uncut grass - perfect for picnics. If you walk up Parliament Hill you have a fantastic view over the whole of London - great opportunity for photographs. You will also find a lot of kite-flyers up there, another fun way to spend an afternoon! In the summer one the ponds is open to swimmers. I haven't done this but hear that it is good. In the winter there is an ice rink near Gospel Oak station. We went this year and it was fab. £10 for an hour including skate hire with Christmassy music. Vter Sharon has a lovely page on Hampstead.

Its free...! I first went to see the dinosaurs when I was about 6, and still love it. Somewhere they have an earthquake simulator, but I couldnt find it, I think its upstairs... They often have open air exhibitions of nature photographs, which you can see without queuing up to enter the actual museum (thoughnqueues are usually quite speedy, they are merely for security bag checks). In the winter there is an ice skating rink.
