Colosseum: of course!

  • Obviously you havent seen Rome without having seen the Coliseum. We walked past it almost by accident on our first evening in Rome - we just hadn't realised how close together everything is. You can walk from the train station all the way to the Vatican in about 40 minutes.

    For photo opportunities, Rome by night is wicked - any idiot (i.e. me) can take some decent pictures.

    Directions: Walk along the road to the left of the Vittorio Emanuelle monument, towards the back of the monument. Past the ruins of old Rome, and there it is.

  • Lord Byron said -
    While stands the Coliseum, Rome shall stand;
    When falls the Coliseum, Rome shall fall;
    And when Rome falls -- the world.

    The coliseum was built in around 72 AD, and was originally known as the Amphitheatrum Flavium. There were 80 entrances, and 50,000 people could watch the fights, persecutions, and hunts of animals.

    At one time, Romans even flooded the lower stages of the arena in order to hold mock naval battles.

    The whole building is about the same height as a 12 - 15 storey building.

  • The walk from central Rome to the Vatican is very pretty, especially along the river. Not only do you pass several well known buildings and monuments, but the views of the Vatican are gorgeous. Don't bother taking buses or taxis in Rome, you'll miss out on a lot!

  • The basilica S. Pietro is very beautiful inside and out - I even got my boyfriend to admit it! I guess it would be even better without all the tourists, but then, I am a tourist so... hmmm

  • One of the things about the basilica is the way the light shines in through the huge windows. It makes the place look more spiritual, although im not a particularly spiritual person....!

  • The square outside the basilica is also gorgeous - I have been lucky as the weather has been very sunny on both of the occasions that I went to visit. In December they were building a huge scene of the creche for the Christmas services.

  • After months of not knowing what this building is, on the north bank of the river, the very reliable source that is belgianchocolate has informed me that it is the:

    "Palazzo Di Giustizia. Or the palace of justice.. it is a more recent building 1889-1910. "

    Thank you choc-man!!

  • Vittorio Emanuelle had this monument built to himself. It is known as the typewriter or the wedding cake due to its shape, and completely monopolises that area. Maybe he was compensating?? Who knows.... However, i did think it was beautiful.

  • It is amazing that a building so old can be in such a good condition. I seem to remember that the Pantheon is actualy older than the Coliseum, yet it is still so intact that religious services are still held there. It can take a little searching to get there, as you have to walk down a few narrow winding streets and across small, pretty piazzas before you find it.

  • We didn't go into the forums themselves, but you can see most of it from the road. Some of the remaining architecture is amazing when you consider how old it all is, and there are remnants all over the city. Bits of it are free to explore.
