I stayed at Jaco Beach on the Pacific coast. It is a laid-back beach community with several good bars and discos. A lot of tourists from Europe vacation here. Surfing is reported to be excellent here as well as at nearby Playa Hermosa.
Costa Rica is generally safe and the locals are non-threatening, except for the armed soldiers ouside of most banks. Roads along the southern Pacific coast are terrible in places; I beat the crap out of my rental car.
