The statue of King Alfred the Great, the 9th Century King, is just one of a number of historical sights in Winchester. Alfred, probably Winchester's most famous citizen, declared Winchester his capital city after the Dark Ages. Wincehster's best known sight is Winchester Cathedral, one of England's finest buildings. Jane Austen, who lived in the town for a number of years, is buried here alongside a number of early English Kings.
- In a nutshell:Attractive town with a beautiful cathedral

I always think of the song, when I think of Winchester! What an imlpressive statue of Alfred the Great!
Lovely pictures and memories of one of my favourite cities - though I'm not sure I agree that Emma is a villain - just a bit too used to getting her own way perhaps? ;)
I was here for a day and thoroughly enjoyed it! High streets all the same it seems huh? Quaint buildings but chains everywhere. Thanks for a lovely pg Barry. Jen x
Great pics! I especially like your comment about lunch on the Cathedral green. This was my favorite part about living in Winchester!!
How lucky a break was this... great to be able to stop and pay a visit. I really like the look of this city... loved your photos and would enjoy walking around here.
It seems that every High Street in the country is going the same way Barry. Yes, very depressing. Mr Branson must have left you stranded for a long time to take all these photos!
nice page Barry

"excellent tips with great pictures"
Amazing pics, Winchester looks like a very interesting place to visit, the house on Chesil Street looks fantastic!
