Kilkenny Off The Beaten Path
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Off The Beaten Path: Black Abbey
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Black Abbey (yet another church!) is in a quiet area of town. The car-park on the right was built for the visit of President Hillary back in the 80s. They demolished a block of old town houses for that auld fellow!

    Off The Beaten Path: Steps
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walk the steps leading to St. Canice's Cathedral and tower. On your way you'll see some of the modern sights of Kilkenny, such as 12 year olds smoking drugs. Bu they all turn out ok in the end!

Off The Beaten Path: Castle Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't forget to visit the gardens at the Northern end of the Castle Park. By day a pleasant place to walk and take pictures. By night full of cider-drinkers...

Off The Beaten Path: Those nice back streets..
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is St. Mary's lane linking High Street to Rose Inn Street. Kilkenny has many quiet streets full of interesting shops and curiosities.

Off The Beaten Path: Not the prettiest area in town!
  • Tip Rating:
  • ........but it was always a shortcut for me getting home. Known as the canal walk, this runs from John Street up to Greens Bridge. It used to be (and perhaps still is) an area for underage drinking - i.e 13 & 14 years olds drinking flagons of cider.

    Off The Beaten Path: Greenshill
  • Tip Rating:
  • Greenshill is a residential road just on the outskirts of town. I can't even remember why i took this photo - it's on my way home and there's not much to see - in the photo you can make out the town in the distance.

Off The Beaten Path: Kilkenny City from afar!
  • Tip Rating:
  • A panorama of the town - not quite, this was taken on one of those grey, wet days which are quite common in Kilkenny. You can see the town in the background and the carpark of Dunnes' Stores in the foreground.

Off The Beaten Path: St. Mary's Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • St. Mary's church in St. Mary's lane, just off High Street. Kilkenny has an abundance of churches and old buildings.

Off The Beaten Path: Jenkinstown Wood
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Jenkinstown Wood is a small woodland park about 10 km outside Kilkenny city. It's a nice place for walking or for a picnic and very popular with the local people.

My mother grew up in nearby Jenkinstown and I have cousins who still live in the area so it's a place I have visited many times. My parents were married in the old Jenkinstown church (see picture) in 1977.

Beautiful photos! Silly question.........Is Green's Bridge the bridge shown in the film "Breakfast on Pluto"? Cillian Murphy walks over it twice I think)
