Mallorca is the largest of the four Balearic islands, located just off the coast of Spain. It's population is approximately 650,000, with about half of that number located in the island's largest town, Palma.
Like its neighbour Ibiza, Mallorca is hugely popular package tour destination and has a reputation as a party place - the destination for a cheap, booze filled, sun-drenched holiday.
But don't let that put off. Scratch beneath Mallorca's surface and you'll find one of the most beautiful locations in Europe. The package tourists stick mainly to resorts in the south and to places like Magaluf and Palmanova near Palma, meaning the rest of the island is much more relaxed and peaceful - some parts are almost waiting to be discovered.
The north of the island is dominated by the Tramuntana mountain range, which contains many peaks above 1000m, and offers some of the best walking in Europe.
We spent four days in Mallorca, with the majority of our time in the mountains. The walking here turned out to be so good that we almost missed the beach completely - not until the afternoon of our final day did we manage some beach time.
- Pros:Excellent hiking, nice mountain villages
- Cons:Too many tourists, difficult to escape crowds
